Trying to tackle "second thoughts" before they piss me off, again.
I have spent quite some time designing and building a pair of midrange horns to use for my "good" stereo gear. I already have a matching, well aligned woofer section and still need to finish the mid-horns with tung oil, then I will need to construct the high frequency horns, which are much simpler to build than the mids and much smaller. The mid-horns sound fabulous and are very efficient.
My second thoughts came about as a result of dragging into the house (I was bored and trying to entertain my daughter. The stuff I have in the garage is a fascination of hers) a speaker system that I had stopped using, which is a totally open back, dipole design, I was using up until some time in October. The sound is so neutral and warm coming from these homebrew "no-cabinet" designs that I may shelve my horns, again for a while. These dipoles are a combination of custom JBL re-cones, which I did, using JBL 2235 (studio monitor) components on old, rock and roll blown E140 (concert speaker much stronger magnets, but the rest is a direct fit) baskets. It makes a better driver for open back use the way I made them, raising the Qts slightly closer to the ideal spec of 0.707. Those are combined with B200 Visaton full range eight inch drivers. Two custom JBLs and one B200 per side make a great sound. If only they were a little more efficient, so I could still be happy with my little, best-thing-since-tits one watt SET (tube/valve) amps. My second thoughts are that, maybe I should use these phenominal sounding speakers and get a more powerful amp, to drive them with.
