Does anyone here watch The Sopranos/mob films?
« on: October 18, 2009, 04:10:42 PM »
I am taking a class called National Issues: Legal and Psych Issues in the Sopranos. For a paper due the 27th, I need to compare a mobster from The Sopranos to a mobster from a film. It cannot be Goodfellas, and one of my classmates said they couldn't find anyone in The Godfather. Has anyone here watched The Sopranos and know of a good mob film for this? (I haven't seen too many gangster films. I loved The Departed, so maybe another Martin Scorcese film would be good?)

Couldn't find a mobster in the Godfather films? How is that even possible?

I love both. What do you want to know? ;D

Use Raymond Blossom from 1997s Playing God. Timothy Hutton played the part and kicked ass. He killed a bunch of Russki fucks and a Chinese Diplomat and embarrassed the fucking FBI.  :indeed:

Millers Crossing or Casino or Mobsters. Godfathers is my favourite but jeez not hard to find mob movies.
I2 today is not i2 of yesteryear. It is a knitting circle. Those that participate be they nice or asshats know their place and the price to be there. Odeon is the overlord

.Benevolent if you toe the line.

Think it is I2 of old? Even Odeon is not so delusional as to think otherwise. He may on occasionally pretend otherwise but his base is that knitting circle.

Censoring/banning/restricting/moderating myself, Calanadale & Scrapheap were all not his finest moments.

They couldn't find a mobster in the first Godfather that was comparable to one of the mobsters in The Sopranos I think.

I just need a film with a mobster that has some similarities to one of The Sopranos mobsters.

The problem is if I pick just any mob movie, I might find that none of the characters have similarities to the ones in The Sopranos.

I know Millers Crossing well and Sopranos and Godfather and have seen Casino a few times.

What characteristics or in which way do you want to define their similarity.

Ethics, physique, culture, temperament, motivation, personality, what exactly?

Casino.

Joe Pesci (Nicky) and Tony Soprano?

I don't know, always struck me as similar in some ways.

Indeed.

Or Tony vs Michael Corleone. They are not alike but they do fill the same function in their respective families.

I'll ask for more information when I go to class tomorrow, but the description of the assignment says to "consider the psychological makeup of the character (relationships, propensity for criminal behavior, family background, religiosity, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, etc.) and the character's interaction with the US legal system."

Maybe I will watch Casino.

Someone else suggested that I compare Christopher to Vincent Mancini in The Godfather Part III, as they are both quick-tempered, related to the mob boss, and lower on the latter. I'm not sure if I would need to watch the first two Godfather films in order to understand the third though.

If you want to read about the real character in Casino read The Enforcer Spilotro, The Chicago Mob's Man Over Vegas by William Roemer.

Yes, you need to have watched the first two.

Damn. Then I guess Casino it is.
