Nah, it's all about watching the world go to shit (and it does quite epically and nearly everyone on Earth dies, but the ending was most bullshit), and no detailed elaboration is made on the whole Mayan predicted it thing. Only one simple comment in the entire film mentioned the Mayans from what I saw, and that person basically said that despite our technology it seems the Mayans knew this was going to happen ages ago; nothing else except for maybe a brief news report showing a suicide at a Mayan temple and the newsreader saying how the sun was acting a bit weird too.

The truth is, the film could have stood alone without even needing to refer to 2012 at all, and just be a junk disaster porn flick. But since 2012 arouses so much superstition, it was exploitation at it's finest to sell the movie.

that was what i was getting at :]
w the "mayans" being their only "intellectual basis" for then to go against the mayans in the end :D

No, this isn't exactly about "OMG THE WORLD IS ENDING" Mayan calculator prophecy nor about the movie, but rather the fact so many people out there in new age communities believe this. I've been thinking that even without a cataclysmic event being imminent on that date, the potential hysteria could inadvertently lead to the very thing that is feared. Even if it doesn't reach an apocalyptic scale, imagine all the ridiculous behavior that will emerge as the time approaches to within a month of the date. Look at Y2K for instance, and how people reacted to that. Well imagine that but amplify it, due to the religious/social significance this date has in culture.

This scenario does concern me, because from what I see, it's entirely plausible too.

So the question is, is it actually possible that a serious event could emerge on December 21st, 2012, but not because it was foretold or predicted, but because people want to believe in it and make it a self-fulfilling prophecy?

actually new agers believe it means the beginning of a better world. transformation. it's everyone else that babbles about doomsday.

That's true when I look at it now, thanks for pointing that out, EDIT: corrected it now. I should have just said "Doomsayers", because those are the people I'm really referring to. Although this horrendous mixture of different beliefs surrounding that specific date, is still an extra concerning factor to the mix nonetheless.

Existence actually has two broad meanings despite its apparent meaningless. The constant reconciliation of all its parts, and the conservation of any closed system as a whole.

Morality can be extrapolated from these meanings to make these two commandments of godless morality: 1). Be in harmony with one another and 2). Care for the environment.

why? if people believe it will be a new start it will bring about positive changes. like a placebo. the change has already started you just don't see it in the news.

I don't argue against a positive change being possible, and I really do hope humanity does get it's act together someday.

But conflicting, inflexible ideologies eventually lead to hostilities though; especially among those who are less patient or tolerant of different ideologies to their own. Unless attitudes change, humanity is unified by a common goal, or humanity finally see beyond prejudice and matures, such an ambition is next to impossible.

The change that humanity needs will only come about when we figure out how to geneticly manipulate the brain. The fact is, that despite all out "progress" we still remain a poorly evolved ape. Our pre-frontal lobes are too small and our adrenaline glands are too big. We only care about social status, mating and fighting. We're afraid of the dark and afraid of dying. As long as we're ruled by our fears, the rulling elites will controll us. If you want to know what the future looks like, imagine a giant boot in the face of humanity... FOREVER!!

Bah fucking humbug. I read The Celestine Prophecies some years back because I had told someone I would finish the book. I would rather watch a marathon of I Love Lucy or The View then touch that POS book again.  :hanged:

No, the problem is guliability. Nothing will be solved by drinking Obama's kool-aide. People need to wake up and realize they're being lied to by almost everyone in authority.

Actually seizing power is the trick though. You have to get an entire nation of people to let go of their fears of imprisonment, torture and death. The only way people can be in power is if they are BRAVE!!  8)

true

in the course of human history i cannot think of a single case where people power has lost to gvt power, if done properly and without whimpyness.
and i dont count lost _battles_, battles are often lost  ;D
