I don't think they had firework laws back then, anyway. In Sweden you could buy guns, dynamnite and opium without any permit in 1860.  :-\

He had a female friend, Berta von Suttner, who was leading in the peace movement. She was probably one of those who convinced him to it.

When you read his biography, it seems like he could very well have been an Aspie. He had no formal chemistry education on university level, he spoke several languages but was very antisocial, he never married, etc etc.

Your ancestors had just survived the potato blight, when the population of Ireland had decreased by nearly a fourth because of the famine.

We had the same plant disease that caused the potato blight in the NYC metro area this year it affects a bunch of crops
