Using the back door, and come in is not that uncommon, if you know the people. Not that many do it at my place, but still. There are area's where the front door is hardly ever used.

But, barging in is very rude and impolite.

This is a nine year old, who has that habit, if he has to pick up his sister. His 11 yo stepsister is just as bad.
Weird, they barge in, without wiping their feet or anything, where as at their own place, they would not dare entering without taking their shoes off, and, when I go there, through the back-door, because it is their way, I will take off my shoes, and will announce myself, before going one step further than just entering the house.

I am very used to my "right" to have the backdoor unlocked. Most people here have it unlocked, when they are home. My neighbour had it unlocked for years, also when she wasn't home.

Luckily this barging in boy is only here every other weekend.

I did lock the door, and found him trying to open it by forcefully pulling and pushing the handle. Not wanting to realise it was locked. Even when I told him to stop, because it was locked, he went on doing that. He is a bit more than averagely dense.......

Oh well, won't see him for a while.

Where I grew up, we kept our doors unlocked all the time in the daytime if we were home and my dad had a locking-up ritual at night that he performed every night before he went to bed.

My grandmother, who lived way out in the country, didn't even lock her door when she went to the store or visited a friend for the day or something.  She only locked it if she went on a days long trip away from home.

I keep my doors locked all the time now unless my daughter is playing outside and she has developed the habit of locking the door behind her when she comes inside, at least most of the time.

My dad has the locking doors at night ritual, like your dad had. Where they live, most of the people that are originally from there have their backdoors open, and, when you are known to them, you'll come in through the back-door, announcing yourself when you do.

My direct neighbour was like your grandmother for a long time.

I lock my doors at night, and when I go away. Most people will ring/knock at the front door here. Only two friends of my daughters do use the back-door. And, the brother and stepsister of one of those friends. But, they are not following protocol at all.

I like to have the back-door open. When away for just a short time, knowing my girls might come home in the mean time, I often do not lock it either. At night, I do want to have it locked though.
