my new vlog on youtube
« on: April 04, 2009, 10:10:59 PM »
I just started a vlog on youtube called "Southwestern PA treasures" I cover various archaelogical, geological and historical finds in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Right now I am doing a series where I locate and vlog about the 23 covered bridges that are in my county which is Washington County in Pennsylvania. I have always been fascinated by covered as they are very majestic and charming structures.

Here is my first video from the series:

Why do the bridges have a roof?

And why the windows? It's not like you are going to stop and look out the window at the view  :P

I am guessing that the windows were added to give the structures a little more charm.

Nice YouTube, Jman.

I think that the roof was to keep snow and rain off the trusses and the planking and make the bridges more resistant to rotting.  Many of these bridges are over 150 years old.

My guess is that the windows add natural light.

The original paint was red like the paint on barns because paint helped preserve the wood and it was the only paint color available (from a homemade mixture of iron oxide, lime, skimmed milk and linseed oil).

My ake very good guesses as those re the reasons.  As for the paint I have books with those  recipes in them.

I know where some are in Alabama, or at least where some were when I was growing up.  My mom used to love showing them to us.
