I wonder if it would horribly derail this topic to point out that if you're going to start making policies that are bound to piss a whole bunch of people off, legalizing recreational drugs would work far better to generate tax money, save money spent on prison and cops, and probably increase public safety in a number of different ways- for example, regulating drug quality; putting dealers out of business; and instituting age minimums for purchase and/or use of the newly legalized substances (which would probably have the paradoxical effect of making drugs less easily accessible to kids).
