I think TheoK is referring to WWII here, when some dutch people ate tulip bulbs to keep themselves from starving.
They are said to taste absolutely horrible.
Googling on tulips and recepies I did find a recipe of filled tulipflowerheads though.
Still, what a waste to eat them,
They just look better in a field, garden or vase.
Bringing an arm full of tulips will work a lot better romantically than forcefeeding the bulbs.
