Why do surviving soldiers often get very old?
« on: January 16, 2009, 11:00:28 AM »
The oldest soldier from the "white" side in the Finnish civil war died on November 4th 2007, 102 years old: Lennart Rönnback. The oldest soldier from the "red" side died on January 1th this year, 111 years old and the oldest person in Finland Aarne Arvonen.

Both were probably Finland-Swedes, by the way. The first name is a completely Swedish name.

Erich Kästner got almost 108 years old. He was the oldest known German soldier from WWI. He took part in WWII too.

The same reasons as everyone else might, just people pay a little more attention to the fact because they fought in war X.

Excellent point. In the words of the great Yoda: "War does not make one great".

Many others survive that long think of all the little old ladies.  Also people of that generation lived though two major world wars and if they were fit probably had to participate
